Private Office

Following the development of the sit-stand desk (link to sit stand desk page) for Formative 3D, Pump was asked to develop an entire office suite of furniture. Working hand-in-hand with Fahrenheit Design, the project went from a single desk to including multiple cabinet styles: a wardrobe, a hanging shelf, and a multi-door lower cabinet. These assemblies filled out an office with the main manufacturing method being additive manufacturing, both large format (LFAM) and fused deposition modeling (FDM). The goal being to give the user an experience they are accustomed to, with a newer, more adaptive way of developing furniture.

In a similar path of development to the sit-stand desk, there was a lot of exploration required in understanding the possibilities. What features, patterns and control were we working with? That was the question our team was searching to answer. With limited access to a Large Format printer, a project within a project required the team to learn the most out of each print. Understanding the levers that can be pulled and the design characteristics that can be achieved. An original client request for assembly to be quick, easy and limited tools, we also explored assembly and installation processes. As the design adjusted with the learnings, a clearer image formed from the fog and allowed for a beautiful office and user experience.

The office expanded to contain the sit-stand desk and 4 more exceptional BIFMA certified assemblies. A 79” tall wardrobe with integrated patterns and space to hang a jacket. A cabinet containing three LFAM printed drawers. An 72” long upper cabinet with an integrated light. A lower two door cabinet that shows off the unique printed surface. All exhibiting an office experience with fantastic usability, a fresh look, and manufacturing methods not typically found in the environment.

The Pump team was excited to not only see the product come to life but also work aggressively within the tight timeline to research, design, and support. The team was involved in early concept development through to manufacturing and production support, including prototyping and testing. With different furniture pieces like these appearing, we are excited to see how the landscape changes in the future.
