The Hololens is an augmented reality headset that is designed to be used in an office environment. However, there are so many useful applications in the construction environment for mixed reality that Trimble partnered with Microsoft to develop a construction suitable version (the XR10) which we were excited to help develop. The XR10 allows the Hololens technology to be paired with a hard hat so that workplace safety standards can be met. However, the remaining challenge of the construction environment is that the bright ambient light can make it difficult to see the projected virtual images on the Hololens heads up display. This was the motivation that lead to us developing the Trimble HoloTint.

We worked with Trimble and Microsoft to come up with different concepts and solutions that provide a higher contrast for the projected images. One of the biggest challenges in this pursuit was finding a solution that works in a variety of environments, ranging from indoors to daylight. After much testing and ideation, we landed on using photochromic lenses to provide a variable contrast for the projected image.

Pump helped develop the mounting and construction approach for the Trimble HoloTint to ensure proper fit and usability. We also worked closely with the manufacturer to find the correct photochromic coating range, as well as ensure fit, function and durability. The final design works well in a wide range of lighting environments. It also fits on the standard Hololens as well as the XR10, providing a more encompassing solution.
