American Innovations (AI) came to Pump with older product versions that were too large, and didn’t meet the evolving needs of their customers. Pump worked closely with AI’s sales, field and engineering teams, as well as AI’s existing suppliers to develop a product that not only met their clients’ needs, but also fit well with AI’s existing product supply chain, capabilities, and expected production quantities.
The product was designed using an existing off-the-shelf enclosure, with minimal screws and hardware in order to help with cost reduction and ease of assembly. With Pump’s help, AI was able to meet a large customer order just 7 months after starting the project.
With the overwhelming success of the GPS300, American Innovations wanted to design a secondary product that provided the same features as the GPS300 with the addition of a built-in solid state relay. Pump encountered many challenges throughout the design process, including thermal and budgetary limitation, as well as the challenge of providing a compact and efficient design without compromising the existing GPS300 design.
With the product operating outdoors, exposed to temperature and humidity extremes, as well as high voltage and current draw, the thermal performance was heavily considered during the design process. Specific part design was tailored to provide optimal heat transfer away from the electronics and board assembly. Thermal simulations and testing was also completed to validate design evolutions and material specifications.
“We are extremely excited about the addition of the GPS350 to our MicroMax suite of products,” says American Innovations’ President Ed Kruft. “Our GPS300 won the NACE Innovation of the Year award last year. We’ve taken it and added an 80 amp AC or DC solid-state relay to the bottom of it. It’s rugged, easy to use and still fits in the palm of your hand. It’s another example of bringing innovative compliance solutions to our customers.”
